Written Answers. - Special Areas of Conservation.
Denis Naughten
Ceist:
430
Mr. Naughten
asked the
Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government
the total number of proposed SAC designated areas in Counties Roscommon and Galway; the locations involved; the reason for their designation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
[16574/03]
The following tables list 97 areas proposed for designation as special areas of conservation, including three areas that overlap both counties, located wholly or partly in counties Galway and Roscommon. Some 85 of these sites have already been formally transmitted for assessment on a candidate list to the European Commission; a consultation process with landowners is currently pending in relation to the remainder. All these areas have been proposed for designation in order to secure the favourable conservation status of ecologically important habitats and species, in accordance with criteria set out in the EU Habitats Directive and in the European Communities (Natural Habitat) Regulations 1997. Important habitats represented in Counties Roscommon and Galway include raised bogs, turloughs, sand dunes, machair as well as rivers and estuaries.
Notifications to landowners set out the reasons for designation in detail and include the provision of a map, an ecological description of the site, particulars of the habitat or species for which the site is proposed, together with details of compensation and appeals mechanisms in place.
An SAC advice line, staffed by my Department, at freephone 1800 40 500 is available to deal with queries and to provide further explanation to interested parties. I consider that, in co-operation with landowners, substantial progress is being made in implementing EU and national habitat protection measures in Ireland.
Special Areas of Conservation – Co. Galway
Summary of Current Position: 70 sites have been advertised in Co. Galway as Special Areas of Conservation. Two of these sites have been extended. 61 have been placed on a candidate list (as provided for in the Habitats Directive). These sites have been formally transmitted to the EU for assessment.
