Vol. 568 No. 5

Written Answers. - Special Olympics.

Joe Sherlock

Ceist:

177 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Defence if all members of the Reserve Defence Force will be entitled to partake in Special Olympics duties; if duties will be restricted to certain divisions, once the games begin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16791/03]

All members of the Reserve Defence Forces, RDF, will be entitled to partake in the Special Olympics duties. The Defence Forces has established a special unit to provide support to the following designated areas: opening ceremony; main operation centre; accommodation security; communications support; ordnance tentage support; and engineering support. These areas are being staffed mainly with reserve personnel who have volunteered and have been accredited by the Special Olympics. This unit consists of approximately 800 personnel.
