Vol. 569 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

146 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he is satisfied that his Department will make available the necessary funds for the upgrading of Garda stations and modern technology throughout the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17308/03]

I am committed to making available the necessary funds where appropriate for the maintenance of Garda stations and equipping the force with modern technology. Responsibility for funding capital works to Garda premises is, as the Deputy is no doubt aware, a matter for the Office of Public Works.

Resources available to the gardaí are continually reviewed to take account of current requirements. Funding for the gardaí has increased significantly in recent years. For example, in the area of information technology systems, approximately €21 million was allocated in 2003, an increase of approximately €5 million on 2002.
