334 Mr. Nolan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if consultations took place with him or his Department officials prior to the decision by the ESB to close a number of rural retail outlets; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18413/03]

Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources (Mr. D. Ahern):

As a matter of courtesy the ESB apprised my Department of its decision to close a number of retail outlets prior to the company's announcement of this course of action. Commercial decisions, such as this one, are day-to-day matters for the ESB and not ones in which I have a function.
