Vol. 570 No. 2

Written Answers. - Foreign Workers.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

164 Mr. Hogan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will investigate the working conditions of foreign workers on the Cork-Swansea car ferry; if she will intervene with the company to improve their pay and conditions; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18640/03]

Surveyors from the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources conduct regular inspections of ships docked at Irish ports to ensure that foreign registered vessels are maintained and operated in compliance with international safety standards. Irish legislation sets minimum standards for pay and conditions of employment for workers employed in Ireland. Complaints that statutory entitlements under employment rights legislation are not being met may be pursued either through the labour inspectorate or through the Rights Commissioner Service.

Question No. 165 answered with Question No. 84.
