Vol. 573 No. 3

Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Schemes.

Arthur Morgan

Ceist:

640 Mr. Morgan asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government the amount spent on urban renewal in each of the past six years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24923/03]

Under the EU co-funded operational programme for local urban and rural development, 1994 to 1999, investment in urban and village renewal projects in cities, towns and villages throughout the country amounted to some €60.57 million. Further investment of €145.5 million was projected under the urban and village renewal measure of the regional operational programmes, 2000-06, though expenditure under these programmes is currently under review in the context on the ongoing mid-term evaluation of the national development plan.

Expenditure under these programmes for the last six years was as follows:

€ million

1997

16.87

1998

17.10

1999

15.47

2000

9.45

2001

5.95

2002

20.64

In addition, three tax incentive based schemes currently operate to support urban development. An urban renewal scheme was introduced in 1999 and applies in respect of the five cities and 38 large towns. A similar town renewal scheme began in 2000 and applies to 100 smaller towns. A living-over-the-shop scheme applies in the five cities. It is projected that total investment over the life of these schemes could be of the order of €3.8 billion.
