Vol. 576 No. 1

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Seamus Healy

Ceist:

302 Mr. Healy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he proposes to approve the installation of closed circuit television cameras for Clonmel, Carrick-on-Shannon and Tipperary Town. [29147/03]

As the Deputy is aware, Clonmel is one of 17 locations set to receive new Garda CCTV systems over the next two years, subject to the availability of funds. The other locations are, in alphabetical order: Athlone, Ballyfermot, Bray, Carlow, Castlebar, Clondalkin, Dundalk, Dun Laoghaire, Ennis, Finglas, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick, Sligo, Tallaght and Waterford.

The contract for the supply, installation and commissioning of a Garda CCT system for Bray, Dundalk, Dún Laoghaire, Finglas, Galway and Limerick – and the associated civil works – was awarded at the end of March 2002 to SKS Communications Limited following a competitive tender competition in accordance with EU and national procurement rules.

The pre-tender process for the CCTV systems in Athlone, Clondalkin, Tallaght and Waterford is at an advanced stage. The requests for tender and detailed technical specification documents are currently being drafted by the superintendent in charge, telecommunications section at Garda Headquarters, taking into account the experience of other Garda CCTV systems and technological developments in this field.

The planning for the installation of CCTV system for Clonmel is currently ongoing. No applications have been received by the CCTV advisory committee concerning Carrick-On-Suir or Tipperary Town. Should any applications be received, they will be considered in due course by the committee.
