Vol. 577 No. 4

Written Answers. - Mayo Landslide.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

121 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Finance the funding which has been made available from his Department to help persons affected by the landslide in north County Mayo; and the help available for these persons. [31465/03]

Following a Government decision, and approval by the Minister for Finance, a humanitarian aid scheme was initiated and has now been implemented by the Irish Red Cross Society on behalf of the OPW. The scheme provided for aid to relieve hardship experienced by householders and was not intended to provide compensation for losses. A total of €300,000 was provided by Office of Public Works to fund the scheme.

As the Deputy is aware, in the immediate aftermath of the landslides, Office of Public Works provided assistance to Mayo County Council in the form of personnel and machinery. The county council has also been advised that, subject to detailed discussions, further such assistance may be provided in carrying out certain aspects of the preventative measures recommended by the consultants to the county council.
