Vol. 577 No. 4

Written Answers. - Medical Malpractice.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

234 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Health and Children if the Government proposes to set up a public inquiry into the malpractice of a person (details supplied) at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, County Louth; and if the inquiry will be carried out in public to ensure that justice is done and seen to be done. [31496/03]

I met again with representatives from Patient Focus on 25 November 2003. I informed the group that Judge Maureen Harding Clark has been selected to chair an inquiry into the issues raised by the Medical Council's report into the practice of Dr. Michael Neary. The format of the inquiry and its terms of reference are the subject of discussion between my Department and the Office of the Attorney General. I expect to be in a position to bring recommendations before Cabinet shortly. I will be meeting again with Patient Focus, today, 17 December 2003, to apprise them of progress in this regard.
