Vol. 577 No. 4

Written Answers. - Cycle Facilities.

John Gormley

Ceist:

253 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Transport if he will consider introducing legislation to permit cyclists to use footpaths if the road clearly poses a danger to their lives; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31663/03]

The Road Traffic (Traffic and Parking) Regulations 1997 and 1998 establish the statutory basis for the segregation of pedestrians and traffic using public roads. Under the regulations, local authorities may provide cycle tracks for the use of cyclists where they deem such facilities to be necessary or appropriate. Local authorities may provide such facilities as segregated parts of footways. I have no proposal to amend the current restrictions on the use of footways by vehicles, including cycles.
