Vol. 101 No. 8

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Ruairí Kiely that on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today he proposes to raise the following matter:

The reduction of VAT on hurleys.

I rule that this is a matter not admissible for discussion on the Adjournment on the grounds that it effectively involves an amendment of legislation.

I am surprised at the ruling of the Chair. In the course of my contribution on Second Stage of the Finance Bill I raised this matter but the Minister seemed to ignore it. The Minister of State at the Department of Education, who is also responsible for sport, wrote to the Minister for Finance in connection with VAT on hurleys but, according to The Cork Examiner, he did not receive a reply. If the Cathaoirleach has disallowed my request I wonder how I can raise the matter in this House. Many people, particularly those involved in the promotion of our national game, hurling, are concerned about this.

The Senator will have to find some other way of raising this matter, such as tabling a motion. Perhaps he would like to discuss the matter with me later to see if he can be accommodated.
