The Dublin Transportation Office, DTO, while it does not have survey data for the years requested by the Deputy, has provided travel survey data for the years 1997 and 2002. The 1997 survey data is based on the DTO's own survey carried out throughout the greater Dublin area, GDA, while the 2002 data are based on the travel to work and travel to school data in the 2002 census of population.
There are some differences between the data gathered in these years. For example, in 1997 the DTO survey included only those travelling by car, bus or rail, while the 2002 census data also includes those walking, cycling and travelling by motorcycle, van or lorry. In addition, while the DTO's 1997 survey was carried out during the period 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., generally the busiest hour on the transport networks, the 2002 census data relates to all journeys to work and school. Using the CSO journey to work and school data, the DTO has provided a best estimate of total 2002 trips in the GDA in the period 8 a.m. to9 a.m. using the stated departure, arrival and journey times of enumerated persons in the GDA.
On the basis of its estimate, the DTO breakdown of morning peak hour journeys, 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., in the greater Dublin area in 1997 and in 2002 are as follows:

The Deputy should be aware that these data exclude travel under other modes which embrace those walking, cycling, and travelling by motorcycle, van or lorry.
