Ceisteanna (702)

Pearse Doherty

Ceist:

702. Deputy Pearse Doherty asked the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the health and safety measures employed by officials of the Road Safety Authority when carrying out roadside inspections of vehicles, particularly heavy goods vehicles; if he is aware of the dangers which such inspections pose to both the officials and other road users, due to their being conducted along the roadside; the additional safety precautions which are to be taken by the officials while conducting these inspections during periods of poor visibility and at night; his plans to introduce designated inspection areas, which are a safe distance from roads; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The operation and management of Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness testing is a statutory function of the Road Safety Authority. I have therefore forwarded the Deputy's Question to the RSA for direct reply and would ask the Deputy to contact my office if a response has not been received within ten days.
