I am pleased to inform the Deputy that my Department has agreed to acquire the property in question.  The acquisition has also been agreed with the current landowner. The Chief State Solicitor's Office, acting on behalf of my Department, is currently progressing the acquisition through the conveyancing stage.

I wish to advise the Deputy that the post primary pupil enrolment data for 2013/14 that she seeks both for schools in County Louth on an individual school basis and nationally are detailed in tabular form in the following table.

However, I would also like to point out to the Deputy that my Department holds no data on pupil expulsions or suspensions. The Educational Welfare Service of TUSLA (formerly the NEWB) are the statutory body with responsibility for engagement with schools in respect of expulsions and suspensions.

Anne Rabbitte

Ceist:

185. Deputy Anne Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Skills the reason a school's request (details supplied) to increase pupil numbers beyond the overall projected figure of 1,000 has been rejected by his Department and the Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board and the school informed to hold numbers at this level. I wish to advise the Deputy that there are 11 second level schools serving the catchment area in question. Two new schools, including the school to which the Deputy refers, have been established in recent years in response to the emerging demographic demands.

Of the 11 schools in the area, four schools will have building projects completed as part of the Departments Major Construction Programme. In addition, four further schools have had significant capital projects completed in recent years. My Department is satisfied that there is sufficient capacity to meet the demand for school places in the catchment area concerned.  This may sometimes, however, lead to pupils not being offered a place in their school of first preference.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 186 to 191, inclusive.

The second phase of the building project referred to by the Deputy was authorised to proceed to tender in October 2016.

The Design Team for the project consists of:

- Kennedy Fitzgerald - Architects,

- Kane Crowe Kavanagh - Quantity Surveyors,

- Arup Consulting Engineers - Civil/Structural Engineers,

- BDP -  Building Services Engineers and

- Atkins - Project Supervisors Design Process (PSDP).

An initial pre-qualification of contractors had been conducted for this project in April 2015. Following authorisation in October last to proceed to tender, the Design Team sought advice from the Office of Government Procurement (OGP) to mitigate against any potentially legal challenges in relation to this pre-qualification which might further delay the project. The advice given to the Design Team by the OGP was that it would be prudent to run the pre-qualification process again. My Department concurred with this advice and authorised the Design Team to run a new pre-qualification exercise.

The Design Team has recently conducted this pre-qualification exercise of suitable contractors and is currently finalising a shortlist of ten contractors who will be requested to tender for the project. Once the shortlist has been finalised, tenders will issue to those contractors for the construction of the new permanent school extension.

Subject to no issues arising it is anticipated that construction will commence in the summer of 2017 and the project will take approximately 18 months to complete.

In relation to the question of a meeting with members of the school’s Parents’ Association, I do not think that would serve any practical purpose at this time. My Department will keep Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Education and Training Board fully informed of all developments and it is a matter for the ETB, in the first instance, to ensure that the school community is kept fully informed.
