82. Deputy Thomas P. Broughan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the total cost of administering medication to prisoners, by prison, in each of the years 2012 to 2016 and to date in 2017; the amount that directly relates to the methadone programme; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraI am advised by the Irish Prison Service that the administration of medicine is a core role of the prison nursing staff who undertake such duties in the prisons on a daily basis in line with Irish Prison Service policy.
In addition, the administration of opioid substitution treatments on a daily basis is part of the role undertaken by the addiction pharmacists in the Mountjoy Campus.
In this context, the Irish Prison Service has advised that it is not possible to provide information on the total cost of administering medication to those in custody.
