Deputy Seán Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Skills the reason the State Examinations Commission had to hire non-teachers in 2018 to mark leaving certificate exam papers; if he is satisfied that there has been no deterioration in the quality of the marking of these papers; the number of appeals submitted in 2018 following the checking of the papers by exam students; the number of appeals submitted in each of the past three years; the number of successful appeals in the past three years; the types of errors discovered following successful rechecks; if more than one person is involved in the initial marking of the exam papers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
