Vol. 10 No. 12

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SECONDARY TEACHERS' SALARIES.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that the manager of a certain Dublin college has notified the lay teachers employed by him that he intends to reduce their salaries for the current school year from £235 each to £200 each, the sum presumed to be the minimum salary to be paid by the schools as portion of the salaries scheme for secondary teachers, despite the fact that, by regulation, the minimum salary referred to does not come into operation until the beginning of next school year, and whether he will take cognisance of the fact that the manager of the school in question had agreed prior to the introduction of the increments scheme to pay his lay teachers £235 each, for the current school year.

I am not aware that such action as is alleged in the first part of the question has been taken. It is true that the proposed new regulations as to the minimum salaries to be paid to registered teachers by secondary schools are not intended to apply to the current school year, and I see no reason why the introduction of the increments scheme should affect the terms of existing agreements between schools and their teachers.
