Vol. 21 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SLIGO TEACHER'S APPOINTMENT.

asked the Minister for Education whether (a) he has sanctioned the appointment of a lady as Principal Teacher of Mullaghroe National Schools, County Sligo; (b) what are the lady's qualifications in mathematics; (c) if the Minister is aware that the parents in this locality would much prefer to have a competent male teacher to replace the recently resigned male teacher; and (d) whether it is usual to have a female teacher appointed as principal of a mixed school with an average of over 30 pupils.

(a) A mistress has been sanctioned in a temporary capacity as principal teacher of Mullaghroe National School. In view of the representations of the Manager of the school, and after consideration of a special report obtained from the Divisional Inspector in the case, I propose to agree to her permanent recognition as principal teacher of the school.

(b) The mistress appointed is a trained teacher. She obtained very high marks in Arithmetic and Mensuration at her final examination in training. She has given efficient service as principal teacher of another school, and I am advised that the educational interests of the pupils will not suffer as a result of her appointment.

(c) No representations were received from the parents in regard to the appointment of a male teacher.

(d) It is not unusual to appoint a woman as principal teacher in a mixed school with an average of over 30 pupils.
