Vol. 21 No. 12

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - INCHICORE WATER SUPPLY.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware (a) that as a result of the increased housing facilities at Inchicore district the population of that area has greatly increased during the past few years; (b) whether complaints have been made concerning the insufficient supply of Vartry water to the district; (c) if he is aware that the Irish Sailors and Soldiers Land Trust abandoned their proposal to build houses at Inchicore owing to the difficulty of procuring a sufficient water supply, and whether, in view of the foregoing, he will consider the advisability of recommending the allocation of a grant to the Borough Commissioners for the provision of facilities for an improved water supply to this district.

No complaints have reached the Department regarding an insufficient supply of water in the Inchicore district, but it is understood that complaints have reached the Commissioners concerning the pressure of the present supply. They are at present laying a 24-in. main from the service reservoirs at Stillorgan to the North side of the city, and when the new main is completed it will be possible to increase the pressure at the Inchicore mains. A loan has already been sanctioned for the work, and the question of a grant in this case does not arise. The houses built by the Sailors and Soldiers Trust are situate outside the city boundary. The South Dublin Rural District Council, in conjuction with the Trust, carried out in 1924 an extension of their water main at Bluebell to provide a water supply to serve the houses erected by the Trust in that area. I am not aware that the Trust have abandoned the building of houses there owing to the absence of a water supply.
