Vol. 21 No. 15

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - WILSON ESTATE (CO. LONGFORD).

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he can state why James Archibold, tenant of an uneconomic holding on the Wilson Estate, Currygrane, County Longford, which is at present being divided by the Land Commission, was not allotted a parcel of the estate, so as to make his holding economic; and if he is aware that the Archibold family have been for many generations tenants on these lands.

The untenanted land acquired on the Wilson Estate was divided by the Land Commissioners in the exercise of their discretion to the best advantage, having regard to the number and circumstances of the applicants and the area of land available for distribution.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he will ensure that a parcel of land on the Wilson Estate, Currygrane, County Longford, is allotted to the McNally's juniors, at present tenants on the estate; and whether, if suitable trustees can be found, they will not be evicted from their father's home.

The Land Commission are not at present in a position to say what course may be adopted in this case.

Assuming that securities, or guardians, can be found for these children, would the Parliamentary Secretary be prepared to give them portion of the lands?

I think that Deputies are aware of the circumstances. There is an action pending in the Longford court at present, and I think it would be incorrect to discuss the matter as it is sub judice.

It is a case of fair play. These children have been left without father or mother, and are good youngsters for their age. They would be almost able to look after land for themselves if they had it. They are being evicted by the Land Commission, though the former owner failed to evict them. The Land Commission should not take over the land and evict these people.
