Vol. 23 No. 10

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - VALENTIA ISLAND SLATE QUARRIES.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that slate quarries had been worked in Valentia Island, Co. Kerry, for many years; that these quarries were closed down about thirty-six years ago; that the slate and slabs taken from these quarries bore a high reputation; and whether, considering the lack of employment and consequent depression in this part of the Gaeltacht, he will send an expert to report on these quarries with a view to having them reopened, and work provided for the labourers of Valentia Island.

I am informed that the slate quarries in Valentia Island were worked for a number of years. Arrangements are being made to have them inspected in the near future. The Deputy will understand that I have no power to undertake the reopening of these or any other quarries. That is a matter for commercial enterprise.
