Vol. 32 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral—Answers. - Division of Westmeath Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state when it is proposed to divide the lands of Heathstown and Ballinlough; how many migrants are being brought to those lands, and how much of the lands it is proposed to give to the migrants.

The proceedings for the acquisition of the lands of Heathstown and Ballinlough by the Land Commission have been almost completed and it is anticipated that the Land Commission will be in a position to put the scheme of division of the lands into operation at an early date. In the division of the lands it is proposed to allot parcels to three migrants who are surrendering their holdings for the relief of congestion in the counties of Mayo and Leitrim.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state how many of these migrants are Land Commission officials and also when the practice of giving away large holdings to Land Commission officials is going to cease in view of the amount of congestion in that area?

No land official has got any holding on this particular estate.

On the adjoining estate, one Land Commission official got 250 acres and another got 300 acres on the Gradwell estate.

That is pure nonsense. No Land Commission official has got land in Westmeath or in any other of the Twenty-Six Counties.

Mr. Kilroy and Mr. Kelly got these two holdings.
