Vol. 39 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Clare Gárdaí Activities.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether certain Detective Officers, then stationed at Ennis, left the Gárda Síochána Barracks at midnight on Saturday, 8th March, 1930, in the official motor car, and returned at about 3 a.m. on Sunday morning, the 9th; and whether the houses of Mr. Michael Kennedy, Darragh, Ennis, and of Mr. John Irwin, Toonagh, Fountain Cross, Ennis, were entered by these officers, or any of them, during their hours of absence from the barracks on the night in question; and whether the Minister will state verbatim from the "duty book" kept in the Gárda Síochána Barracks, Ennis, the entry relevant to the nature of the business which necessitated a midnight visit to Messrs. Kennedy and Irwin, the length of time the officers remained on their premises, and whether the officers were furnished with warrants under the Firearms Act, 1925, or other warrants signed by the District Justice or a Peace Commissioner; and whether entry was not effected against the wishes of the occupiers; and further, to ask the Minister the result of the visit, and whether any charge was preferred against any person then present on the premises; and whether any arrests were made on the premises of Messrs. Kennedy and Irwin, searched for arms on this occasion, and with what result; and further, to ask the Minister if he can state the number of times during the past five years in respect of each of them, Messrs. Kennedy and Irwin have been held up and questioned, and their houses entered by these particular officers.

I have called for a report on the matter, and when the information is received, I will communicate with the Deputy.
