Vol. 50 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Serving of Prison Sentence.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state what was the term of imprisonment to which a Mr. McWalter was sentenced in connection with a shooting outrage at Belcarra in August, 1932; how much of this sentence was served; how much of it was passed in a prison hospital; and for what portion of the time the prisoner had his personal liberty restrained.

Thomas J. McWalter was convicted at the Castlebar District Court on the 7th September, 1932, of an offence against the Firearms Act, 1925, and sentenced to six months imprisonment. He was committed to Sligo Prison on the same date, and on the 12th September he was transferred for surgical treatment to the County Hospital, Sligo, under the powers conferred by Section 17 (6) of the Criminal Justice Administration Act, 1914. In accordance with the provisions of that section the prisoner was deemed to be in legal custody while in hospital. His sentence expired on the 5th February, 1933, while he was still in the County Hospital.

He was not taught Irish and gymnastics in the prison?

He was not. I wish we had an opportunity of teaching the Deputy manners and we would do it.

In Mountjoy?

Anywhere.

That would be the place I would expect to meet the Minister.
