Vol. 55 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roscommon Tenants and Land Commission.

asked the Minister for Lands if tenants on the Potts Estate, near Ballinasloe, County Roscommon, have made representations to him concerning the erection of a bridge on the lands of the estate to enable them to take home their crops; if they have refused to pay their rents and if they have alleged that their refusal to pay is because the Irish Land Commission has failed to carry out an undertaking given to them concerning this bridge by the inspector of the Irish Land Commission who made the subdivisions.

A number of the tenants on the Potts Estate have made representations to the Land Commission in regard to the erection of a bridge over the River Suck on this estate. A communication has been received from these tenants, objecting to any further payment by them in respect of rent or interest on their parcels unless a bridge is provided.

The Land Commission have given no undertaking to the tenants that a bridge would be erected, but they would probably be prepared to join with the local authorities in providing the cost of a bridge at this place which might be utilised in connection with a new county road.

What steps have the Land Commission taken to see that these tenants are met in some way, that there is some arrangement made whereby the tenants would pay their share and the Land Commission would be able to erect a bridge? Have the Land Commission taken any steps to approach either the local authority or the tenants?

The Land Commission have approached the local authority, but so far they have failed to reach any agreement with the county surveyor concerned.
