Vol. 57 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Crayfish—Export Bounty.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will extend to crayfish the export bounty now payable on lobsters.

Dr. Ryan

Inasmuch as the only real demand for our crayfish is from Continental markets, I do not see that any good purpose would be served by extending to that commodity the export bounty now payable on lobsters consigned to British markets.

Is the Minister aware that the Continental market is now beginning to close up, and that there is a demand for this fish in Britain if it could only be got into the market?

Dr. Ryan

I think only about 7 per cent. was consigned to Great Britain last year.

Because at that time there was a particularly big demand for crayfish on the Continent, but I think that market is now closing down.
