Vol. 57 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Artificial Manures.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that during the past two years there has been a remarkable falling off in the quantity of artificial manures used in the Free State; that the falling off is due to the fact that many farmers are financially embarrassed and if he is prepared to try and devise some scheme which will prevent the continued impoverishment of the land.

Dr. Ryan

Official statistics as to imports do not bear out the Deputy's suggestion that during the past two years there has been a falling off in the quantity of artificial manures used in the Saorstát. While these imports show a progressive decline from 1930 to 1933, inclusive, they took an upward turn in 1935 and the figures available for imports during the period January to April of this year show that this tendency has been maintained.
