Vol. 81 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Proposed Poulaphouca-Glendalough Motor Road.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if, in view of the near approach of the completion of the Liffey Hydro-Electric and Water Supply Scheme, he will take steps to have included in any grant to the appropriate county council for the relief of unemployment, provision for the construction of a suitable motor road between Poulaphouca and Glendalough, via the Wicklow Gap, and thus open to tourist traffic a little known and very beautiful district of County Wicklow.

Grants amounting to £8,100 were allocated last year towards the reconstruction of two sections of this road. Further works are in contemplation.

Will the Minister say, in view of the near completion of the Poulaphouca works, if he could in any way expedite the work of doing the exceptionally bad parts of that road so as to have them ready by next year's tourist season?

I could not say what sort of schemes would be undertaken. One of the difficulties in that area was that the unemployment content was very small. I think it was only 50 in that particular area last year. The Deputy knows that the allocation of these grants depends on those figures.
