Vol. 86 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport of Fish from Connemara.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that salmon sent from North-West Connemara cannot reach the Dublin market until the morning of the fourth day from the day of dispatch; and if, in view of the proximity of the lobster season, as well as for the benefit of the salmon trade, he will ask the Great Southern Railways Company, Limited, to rearrange the time-table of the road freight service from Clifden so as to reduce the time in transit to a minimum.

I am informed by the Great Southern Railways Company that fish for the Dublin market is not available for transport from Clifden before noon each day. It is taken to Galway by railway lorry leaving Clifden at approximately 1.30 p.m. and is dispatched to Dublin by the passenger train from Galway at 11 a.m. the following morning. Should the fish be available for transport by 8 a.m. the company would be prepared to arrange a road freight service to catch the 11 a.m. train on the same day, in which case fish could reach Dublin on the day of dispatch.
