Vol. 91 No. 10

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Dun Laoghaire Library Services.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will take the necessary steps to permit the Dun Laoghaire Borough Council to increase the library rate so as to enable them extend and augment the library services of the borough.

The proposal, which would require legislation, will receive consideration when a suitable opportunity arises. The existing library service in Dun Laoghaire is comparatively good. There are more books in stock per 100 of the population than in any county borough and the library expenditure per head of population is higher than that of any county borough except Dublin, to which it approximates.

Does the Deputy wish to ask a supplementary? He may not make further appeals.

Is the Minister aware that there is need for a library in Dalkey; that there has been agitation over a period in regard to it; and that, as a matter of fact, the borough manager is anxious that a library should be provided?

I have already informed the Deputy that the proposal would require legislation and will be considered when the opportunity arises.
