Vol. 96 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coast Erosion in Kerry.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what action he intends to take regarding coast erosion on the Marshall estate at Callinafercy, Milltown, County Kerry; if he is aware that three holdings have been completely swept away by the incursion of the sea, two others partly destroyed and several others threatened; and, if so, if he will have the embankments restored at this point; and, in view of the fact that the people concerned have been so deprived of their holdings, if he is prepared to make a remission of annuities, with restrospective effect, in those cases.

The Land Commission are not responsible for the repair or maintenance of the sea or river embankment on the Leeson Marshall estate at Callinafercy. They have at present under consideration representations made on behalf of persons whose holdings at Callinafercy are stated to be subject to flooding as a result of the breaking of the embankments, and are having inquiries made with a view to determining what assistance, if any, they can give in the matter. Should holdings or parts thereof be permanently submerged due to erosion, the question would arise of writing off as irrecoverable apportioned parts of the land purchase annuities applicable to the submerged areas, under Section 37 of the Land Act, 1933.
