Vol. 98 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reopening of Cork Branch Lines.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is in a position to state when the branch railway lines from Fermoy to Mitchelstown and from Banteer to Kanturk and Newmarket are likely to be reopened.

I am not in a position to state when the Fermoy-Mitchelstown and the Banteer-Newmarket railway lines will be reopened for general traffic. I understand that these lines were used by Córas Iompair Éireann for fairs at Mitchelstown, Kanturk and Newmarket, whenever necessary. Alternative road passenger and merchandise services have been provided in the areas previously served by these lines.

Is the Minister aware that there is not an adequate service in the area at the moment?

I do not think there is an adequate transport service in any part of the country at the moment.
