Vol. 98 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Lectures on Kindness to Animals.

asked the Minister for Education whether representations have been made to him, requesting that lectures or talks might be given in schools to discourage cruelty to animals; and whether he would favourably consider permitting facilities for such lectures.

My Department has always sought to impress on teachers the desirability of inculcating in their pupils a spirit of kindness towards animals and, in view of representations made to me some years ago regarding the matter, I took occasion to remind the teachers of this aspect of the training of the children in the principles of charity and mercy.

From time to time, teachers are urged to avail themselves of every opportunity afforded in the courses of school work to instruct their pupils, not only to avoid cruelty to animals but to treat them with consideration and kindness.
