Vol. 99 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Insurance Act, 1920.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether he is prepared to introduce legislation to make good contributions lost as a result of the repeal of Section 25 of the Unemployment Insurance Act, 1920.

The repeal of Section 25 of the Unemployment Insurance Act, 1920, did not affect in any way the validity of contributions standing to the credit of insured contributors. It withdrew certain rights to refund in respect of contributions. Experience had shown that these rights imposed an excessive burden on the unemployment fund. Cash compensation was, however, made to those insured contributors whose rights under Section 25 were, by reason of age, approaching maturity.

I do not consider that any legislation in the matter is necessary.
