Vol. 103 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Second-Hand Text Books.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his attention was directed to an advertisement published in a Dublin newspaper on October 14th in which a school of accountancy in Glasgow offered to repurchase second-hand text books from former students at full published prices; whether he has considered the desirability of prohibiting the export of books of this kind; and if so, whether he will make a statement in regard to the matter.

The export of books of all kinds is controlled under the Emergency Powers (Control of Exports) Order, 1940, but exports of books by parcel post are allowed without licence. This concession is intended to facilitate private individuals sending books to friends abroad. Export licences are given to enable printers and publishers here to maintain reasonable trade connections with outside purchasers. No applications for export licences for books of the kind mentioned by the Deputy have been received.
