Vol. 112 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Employment Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will accede to the request of Galway County Council to permit unemployed workers who were employed on bogs during the years prior to 1947, but were not actually engaged on turf production in the year 1947, to work on the drainage and other special schemes for the relief of unemployment.

It has been made a general condition for employment on these special schemes that the applicant must have been employed on hand-won turf production by either the county council or Bord na Móna in 1947. It is not intended to depart from this condition. I understand, however, that adequate employment on road work in County Galway is at present available in practically all areas, and that any cases of hardship will, if brought to the attention of the county engineer, receive the most sympathetic consideration possible.
