Vol. 113 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Workmen's Compensation.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when he proposes to introduce proposals for legislation to amend the Workmen's Compensation Act, 1934, to provide inter alia for higher payments in respect of weekly compensation.

I hope to be in a position, within the next few weeks, to introduce a Bill providing for an increase in the maximum weekly compensation payable under the Act of 1934.

Is it correct that the present arrangement under which a bonus of 7/6 is paid may possibly end, as far as legal sanction is concerned, by the end of the year? If that is so, can the Minister give us any indication as to the date on which he will introduce amending legislation?

I think there is foundation for the first part of the Deputy's surmise. In reply to the second part of the supplementary question, I hope with the co-operation of the House to have this Bill passed by the House before Christmas.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether it has now been decided not to include workmen's compensation in the proposed comprehensive social security scheme; and, if so, whether it is intended to introduce proposals for legislation to amend the Workmen's Compensation Act, 1934, with a view to increasing the existing rates of compensation and if he will indicate when such proposals will be introduced.

No decision has yet been reached as to the place which workmen's compensation will occupy in the comprehensive social security scheme. As indicated in reply to the previous question, I hope to be in a position, within the next few weeks, to introduce a Bill providing for an increase in the maximum weekly compensation payable under the Workmen's Compensation Act, 1934.
