Vol. 113 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dún Laoghaire Harbour Employment.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare to state whether Mr. Thomas Creighton, 20 Parnell Street, Sallynoggin, County Dublin, who for a number of years had been temporarily employed during the summer in the Harbour Yard, Dún Laoghaire, had been registered at the Dún Laoghaire Labour Exchange since April last, or subsequently, as seeking employment; whether his name had been sent by the labour exchange to the appropriate quarter in connection with the vacancies for temporary employment which existed during the year in the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Yard; and whether in particular his name had been sent forward in connection with the temporary vacancies which were filled on or about the 14th October last; and whether, if Mr. Creighton's name was not sent forward on this or any other occasion, he will state why.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the affirmative. The applicant was submitted, without success, by the Dún Laoghaire Employment Exchange for vacancies in the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Yard, notified on 20th April, 20th August, and 14th October. He was not submitted for vacancies notified on 16th June as they were of the same type as those for which he had been rejected on 20th April. As the Deputy is, no doubt, aware, the function of my Department in a matter of this kind is to submit a number of applicants from whom a choice may be made. The final selection is made by the employing authority. I might add that this applicant was recently placed in temporary employment with the Department of Posts and Telegraphs.
