asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the number of persons who paid unemployment insurance contributions and the total amount of contributions so paid in the last insurance year.

The precise figures asked for by the Deputy are not available. On the basis of the sales of Unemployment Insurance stamps for the 12 months ended the 30th June, 1948, the latest period for which this information is available, it is estimated that the weekly average number of persons paying Unemployment Insurance contributions in that year was 318,000, and that the contributions paid amounted to £1,183,500. These figures are provisional and subject to audit.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the number of persons who paid contributions and the total amount of such contributions paid under the Insurance (Intermittent Unemployment) Act, 1942.

The Deputy has not indicated the period in respect of which he desires particulars, but it is assumed that it is in respect of the latest year for which details are available.

On the basis of the sales of supplementary insurance stamps under the Insurance (Intermittent Unemployment) Act, 1942, in respect of the 12 months ended 31st July, 1948, it is estimated that the weekly average number of persons paying contributions under the Act in that period was 27,800, and that the contributions paid amounted to £38,900. These are the most recent figures available; they are provisional and subject to audit.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state (a) the total number of persons insured under the National Health and Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Acts who paid contributions in the year ending 30th June, 1948, (b) the number who paid contributions under these Acts in the same period under the headings (i) male agricultural, (ii) female agricultural, (iii) others, and (c) the total number of weekly contributions paid under each heading at (b).

The information asked for at (a) and (b) of the question is not available. As regards (c), the total number of weekly contributions paid in respect of persons insured under the National Health and Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Acts for the year ended 30th June, 1948, was 24,794,100, apportioned as follows:—
