Vol. 113 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Minor Relief Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that in the employment of gangers and men under minor relief schemes in South Kerry, undue influence by certain public men in the area is being exercised, so that only their own political supporters may be selected for employment; and, if so, whether he will state what steps he proposes to take to prevent a continuance of such unjust distribution of work and of public money.

I am not aware of any cases of the kind referred to by the Deputy, but if he will give me particulars I shall have inquiries made at once. The instructions concerning the appointment of gangers require that only suitable and competent persons are appointed, and I propose to see that these instructions are carried out. The workmen are recruited from lists of unemployment assistance recipients supplied by the local employment office.
