Vol. 123 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Improvement of Roads.

asked the Minister for Lands whether a memorial dated 24th October, 1950, has been received by the Land Commission from tenants of Barleymount, Killarney, and Headford, regarding the drainage of and improvement of roads in their turbary plots at Calfmount, Headford; and, if so, whether the memorial has been considered by the Land Commission, and with what result.

The answer to the first part of the question is "yes". As the holdings and turbary in question have been vested in the tenants, the drainage of the bog and the repair of roads are not matters for the Land Commission. The tenants have been so informed and it has been suggested to them that they might apply to the Special Employment Schemes Office for consideration.

In view of the fact that the Land Commission allocated turbary plots to the farmers concerned, will the Minister not admit that there is some liability on the Land Commission as well as on the Office of Public Works to provide some accommodation so far as roadways and drainage are concerned?

That is not the position, because when lands or bogs are vested in the tenants, the landlord's responsibility ceases, and the landlord's responsibility, which the Land Commission had on the date of vesting, then ceased and they have not authority to do what the Deputy suggests.
