Vol. 124 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mobile Police Squad.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he will consider the question of establishing a motor police squad to patrol all main roads with a view to enforcing the traffic rules and regulations and bringing offenders to justice and so make the roads safe for other users.

The committee which is at present inquiring into Garda Síochána organisation, duties and strength will no doubt have some recommendation to make on this question, and when the report of the committee is received I shall give careful consideration to the matter.

I should like to make it clear, however, that motor patrols are being operated at present. In the Dublin metropolitan area there are two cars employed whole-time and a number of cars employed part-time on traffic patrols, two cars are employed whole-time in the Dublin-Wicklow division, and in each of the remaining 19 divisions at least one car is used part-time for traffic patrols.
