Vol. 129 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Training Centre for Garda Recruits.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether he has considered the desirability of using Boyle Military barracks as a training centre for recruits to the Garda Síochána; and, if so, with what result.

As a measure of decentralisation, the question of transferring the training depot for Garda recruits out of Dublin is being considered, but a decision has not yet been reached.

I have received a report on Boyle Military Barracks, but it seems that there is not sufficient accommodation there.

Does the Minister's statement mean that Boyle will not be considered as a training centre in view of the limited accommodation available, according to the Minister's reply? Has the Minister cut out Boyle as a likely centre?

The accommodation at Boyle has been examined. I understand that even the whole of the barracks is too small.

Does that mean that Boyle will not now be considered as a suitable training centre?

It was a question of finding a suitable barracks in some part of the country. Amongst others, Boyle was examined but was found to be too small for the purpose.

I hope the Minister will not forget the claims of Boyle when he is making up his mind.
