Vol. 129 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Motor Car.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state whether he is aware that it was recently disclosed in court that a motor car had been imported into the State upon a circulation permit issued by a registration authority (as defined in S.R. & O. 1934, No. 119) outside the State without an appropriate insurance being in force for the whole period of importation; and, if so, whether there is any deposit or other fund maintained here by such registration authority to meet claims by persons injured by such a vehicle who would otherwise have no redress within the State.

I have no information concerning the court case referred to by the Deputy. Perhaps he would arrange to send particulars to my Department.

On the general question of insurance cover for motor cars which are being temporarily imported into the State, Article 13 of the Road Vehicles (International Circulation) Regulations, 1934, applies, as intimated in the reply given to the Deputy on the 27th ultimo.

Registration authorities are not required to maintain a deposit or set up a fund to meet claims against motorists.
