Vol. 129 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bunkering of Vessels at Cork.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether the Cork Harbour Commissioners have now withdrawn their proposals for bunkering vessels upstream at Cork in view of the complete inability of the larger types of vessels to get up the river.

No proposals have been submitted by the Cork Harbour Commissioners to my Department in connection with the bunkering of vessels upstream at Cork.

Is the Minister aware that one of Irish Shipping's biggest ships, the "Irish Pine," was bunkered at the Cork quays last week, after leaving Rushbrooke docks and that it is a big advantage to the docks to have such facilities at Cork? What the harbour commissioners require are facilities for ocean going tankers at Haulbowline.

I think it is unfair that Deputy Corry should advertise the port of Cork as being unable to receive large ships. Recently a ship having 10,000 tons of grain docked at Cork. I resent the implication that Cork Harbour is unable to cope with larger types of vessels.
