Vol. 129 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Seed Wheat for the Current Season.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he has satisfied himself that there is sufficient seed wheat available for the current season and that the disparity in price of such seed as between one area and another is justified.

I have no reason to think that there will be any shortage of seed wheat this season, but temporary local shortages may occur if farmers delay ordering their seed until they are ready to sow.

Growers should, therefore, order their seed in good time. If any of them are unable to get their full requirements locally and notify my Department they will be put in touch with alternative sources of supply.

A degree of variation in prices of seed is to be expected, depending on the cost of assembly of each lot, the transport charge to the point of sale and whether sold directly to the grower by an assembler or through a wholesaler or retailer. Credit terms and the quantity sold also cause variations in price.
