Vol. 129 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hand-won Turf.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Local Government whether it is proposed to continue the county council hand-won turf production drive this year.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Local Government what steps are or have been taken to ensure that local authorities will purchase hand-won turf for their fuel requirements in the coming year.

With your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 33 and 34 together. I have already indicated to local authorities the desirability in present circumstances of producing or securing in the coming season supplies of turf to meet their own needs, and to maintain a reasonable reserve supply. I have requested each local authority concerned to inform me of their intentions as regards the direct production of turf by hand-won or other methods, and of any proposed purchases by contract. This information was sought by circular letter issued on the 19th February, and replies are awaited.
