Vol. 130 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Coast Pathways.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that old recognised pathways in County Dublin around the sea coast have been cut off by private owners; and, if so, if he will request the local authorities to preserve these pathways for people who enjoyed walking on them and as an amenity for tourists.

I am not aware of any specific case of a public pathway being closed. If it is a question of interference with a public right of way, a remedy may be sought through the courts. Local authorities have certain powers of providing public walks but the exercise of these powers is a matter within their discretion. I could not direct them to take action. If the Deputy has any particular case in mind, he might bring it to the notice of the local authority concerned.

Is the Minister aware that my idea in putting down this question was to focus attention on these old pathways that have been used over the centuries? Now that the particular places are becoming more densely populated, many of the old pathways which were very much appreciated by local people and tourists are being closed. I would like the Minister to take up this matter.

I understand that people who have rights that date back so far as the Deputy would seem to suggest usually try to protect those rights and it is their responsibility.
