Vol. 130 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retirement of Rate Collectors.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state whether he has issued instructions requiring the retiral of rate collectors at 65 years of age; and, if so, if he will state the terms of these instructions and the reasons therefor, and if he will state in respect of each local authority affected (1) the number of rate collectors who have been or who will by the 1st April, 1952, be required to retire by virtue of these instructions, and (2) the number of all such persons who will be pensionable on retirement.

I have made an Order declaring the age of 65 to be the age limit for rate collectors who are entitled to a superannuation allowance on retirement. The Age Limit Order applies to rate collectors a rule already applicable to most classes of officers of local authorities. The Order does not come into force until the 1st May, 1952, and accordingly no officer is required to retire under it before that date. The particulars sought in the concluding portions of the question are accordingly not yet available.

Will the Minister say what is the date?

The 1st May, 1952.

And I am to understand that it applies only to persons who are entitled to a superannuation allowance?
