Vol. 131 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meat and Bone Meal Supplies.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, with a view to helping farmers who want to feed their own grain to live stock and "walk it off the land", he will take steps to ensure that adequate supplies of meat and bone meal will be made available to farmers to enable them to make their own balanced ration and at prices equal to those charged to manufacturers of compound feeding stuffs.

I understand that supplies of meat and bone meal have been reasonably satisfactory in recent months and I do not propose to control the distribution of this material as proposed by the Deputy. The output of meat and bone meal has been on the increase for some time past and it is hoped that when the new factory at Ballinasloe commences production supplies will be sufficient to meet requirements. Farmers may, of course, use separated milk, when available, as a substitute for meat and bone meal.
